Shouldn't ice boxes during the 1940's open up on top for ice.?

I've seen pictures of ice boxes where you open the door in front and place the ice in the upper portion of the box. However, when I was a little girl I thought the top opened up and you placed the ice inside. I've been trying to find a picture of a top opening box and I can't find one. This makes me wonder if I am remembering it wrong.

  2. there were some that opened on top, it was a little before my time, saw one in an antique shop once in salt lake 20 years ago.
  3. We had a Norge in the 60s, it had one door, ice was on top inside an inner door. We used those metal trays that had the pull handle and the ice cubes, yes cubes, would remain in the tray after lifting the metal ice mold. It was neato!
  4. You're not wrong. I have an old ice box that's top opening. I use it for my liquor bottles.
