What problems do you have with conventional ice chest coolers?

Im in an engineering design and development class and i am trying to make a better alternative solution to ice chest coolers, that is more convenient and easy to use. I wanted to know what problems there are with conventional coolers to justify reverse engineering a cooler. We are thinking making one that can plug directly into a cigarette lighter. What other problems have you found with regular coolers?

1. Well...There is actually already a cooler that allows you to plug into a car output. I guess the main problem would be the ice melting.... bugs getting inside.... and it takes a while for an item to get chill in the cooler....=(
